Education has long been critical for human welfare, but is even more so in a time of rapid economic change. Without learning, students will be locked into lives of poverty and exclusion, and the children whom societies fail the most are those most in need of a good education to succeed in life. When delivered well, education cures a host of societal ills. For individuals, it promotes employment, earnings, health, and poverty reduction. For societies, it spurs innovation, strengthens institutions, and fosters social cohesion. World Bank-World Development Report 2018. UNESCO reports that 250 million children around the globe lack basic literacy skills. “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.”

Education is both the means as well as the end to a better life; means, because it empowers an individual to earn his/her livelihood and the end because it increases one's awareness on a range of issues – from healthcare to appropriate social behavior to understanding one's rights, and in the process evolve as a better citizen. 

Millions of children in the world are still denied their right to education because of poverty. 1 in 11 children go to work when they should be in school. Close to 53% of girls in the age group of 5 to 9 years are illiterate. When it is hard to afford necessities like food, shelter, and clothing; education becomes a luxury that the poor give up. Illiteracy then leads to further poverty.
